How to Get to Zomba, Malawi

Zomba is easiest reached by road from Blantyre, with Chileka International Airport (BLZ) in Blantyre the nearest airport and Kamuzu International Airport (LLW) in Lilongwe serving longer-distance connections. There is no reliable passenger rail to Zomba, so most visitors arrive by air to Blantyre or by intercity bus and complete the trip to Zomba by taxi or minibus.

By Air

Chileka International Airport (BLZ): Chileka is the closest airport to Zomba, located near Blantyre (about 40-50 km). From Chileka you can take a metered taxi or private transfer direct to Zomba (approximately 45-75 minutes depending on traffic). Expect fares for a private taxi/transfer in the low US$ range (typical airport-to-Zomba transfers are commonly booked for roughly US$15-30; prices vary by operator). There are also shared minibuses or shuttle services into Blantyre city centre (15-25 minutes to Blantyre) from where regular minibuses run to Zomba (additional 40-60 minutes).

Kamuzu International Airport (LLW): Kamuzu in Lilongwe is the main airport for northern and central Malawi and is much further from Zomba (roughly 300 km). By road the trip to Zomba usually takes about 4-5 hours by private car or coach. Scheduled intercity coaches and shuttle operators run Lilongwe-Blantyre routes (some continue or connect on to Zomba); coach fares commonly fall in the low double-digit US dollar range and travel time is typically 4-6 hours depending on stops.

By Train & Bus

Train: There is no regular passenger rail service that reliably serves Zomba today. Malawi’s rail network is primarily used for freight and long-distance passenger services are limited and intermittent; the nearest practical railheads for freight/limited services are in the Blantyre/Limbe area. For passenger travel to Zomba you should plan on road transport rather than relying on scheduled trains.

Bus: Regular intercity buses and frequent minibuses (often called “dala-dala” or shuttle buses) run between Blantyre and Zomba. Services depart from Blantyre’s main bus/minibus area (city centre) and arrive at Zomba’s bus stops near the market and town centre; the road trip is about 45-75 minutes. Expect low fares for minibuses (very affordable, often paid in kwacha at the point of boarding) and higher-priced, more comfortable coach services for longer routes such as Lilongwe-Blantyre which take 4-6 hours.

How to Get Around Zomba, Malawi

Zomba is best navigated on a combination of minibuses for budget travel and taxis or private transfers for convenience and direct routes - especially when arriving from Chileka/Blantyre. For short trips in town, walking and boda-bodas are quick; hire a car if you plan to explore the Zomba Plateau and outlying rural areas.

Shopping in Zomba, Malawi #

Zomba’s shopping is low-key and local: think busy open-air markets, roadside craft stalls and small shops around the old colonial center. The town is best known for its weekly central market and for artisans who sell wood carvings, woven baskets and printed chitenje cloth; many of the nicer handicrafts are sold by vendors on the Zomba Plateau. Bargain politely at the market - start about 30-40% below the asking price and work upward - and focus buying on locally made woodwork and textiles rather than imported goods.
