Inside the cave visitors encounter richly decorated passages and caverns with stalactites, stalagmites and flowstone formations; the principal tourist sections are served by paved walkways and lighting that make otherwise rugged passages accessible. Guided routes lead through the developed show cave areas where ceiling heights and chamber sizes are notably large.
The cave system formed through long-term dissolution of soluble rock under the karst landscape typical of northwestern Guizhou; it has been developed for public visits and scientific study in the modern era.
