Zeyrek Mosque

Zeyrek Mosque is the Ottoman-era name for the former Byzantine Monastery of Christ Pantokrator, a 12th-century religious and monastic complex in Istanbul’s historic peninsula. The complex originally comprised multiple churches and monastic buildings and is an important surviving example of middle Byzantine architecture.

Following the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople the main church and parts of the complex were converted to a mosque and the group of buildings has seen various repairs and alterations since. The site attracts interest for its architectural detail, combined Byzantine and Ottoman history, and its prominent hilltop position in the Zeyrek neighbourhood.

The complex sits in the Fatih district on the southern slope of the historic peninsula, overlooking parts of the Golden Horn and within the broader area of Istanbul’s old-city historical monuments.
