How to Get to Zeila

By Air

Hargeisa Egal International Airport (HGA): Hargeisa is the main international airport for Somaliland and is the closest scheduled-air airport often used to approach the Awdal region. From Hargeisa you will need to continue by road to reach Zeila: shared minibuses and private taxis operate from Hargeisa town; expect a 2.5-4 hour drive depending on road and border conditions. Typical prices for private taxis range widely (roughly USD 40-100) - negotiate and confirm the fare before departing.

Djibouti-Ambouli International Airport (JIB): Djibouti City is another common international entry point for the wider Red Sea/Gulf of Aden area. Overland travel from Djibouti to Zeila crosses an international border and can take 3-6 hours depending on border/road conditions; transport options are private taxis, hired 4x4s or pre-arranged transfers. Private transfers from Djibouti can cost from about USD 60-150; shared transport (minibuses) is cheaper but less reliable and schedule-dependent.

By Train & Bus

Bus / Shared Minibus: Overland buses and shared minibuses (sometimes called “safar”) are the most common public option to reach Zeila from regional hubs (Hargeisa, Borama or Djibouti). Travel times vary with road condition: plan on several hours (2-6 hours). Fares depend on origin and comfort; expect roughly USD 5-20 on shared services for regional legs.

No regular passenger rail service: There is no regular national passenger rail connection serving Zeila itself. Travel in the region is primarily by road; use scheduled buses or arrange private transfers from larger towns such as Hargeisa or cross-border from Djibouti.

How to Get Around Zeila #

Zeila (Saylac) is compact and easy to explore on foot around the old port and shoreline; many streets are unpaved, so sensible shoes help. There is no formal public-transport network - short local trips are usually done by shared pickup taxis or hired vehicles, and longer journeys require arranging a ride from larger towns.

Plan for limited signage and sparse services: if you need to travel farther, hire a driver or join a convoy, and carry water and basic supplies. Expect informal pricing for hires; agree fares up front.
