Zavoj Lake Monastery

Zavoj Lake is a mountain reservoir in eastern Serbia, located within the highland slopes of the Balkan (Stara Planina) range. It was formed by impounding a river and occupies a valley setting surrounded by forested ridges.

The reservoir is set in a largely rural, mountainous landscape and is used for local fishing, seasonal recreation and water management. Roads and viewpoints around the lake provide scenic vistas of the water against the surrounding slopes.

The body of water is the result of mid-20th century dam construction carried out to regulate river flows and provide hydroelectric capacity and flood control. The immediate area is primarily natural and sparsely populated.

Geographically the lake sits in the Stara Planina mountains of southeastern Serbia, close to the border zone with Bulgaria and surrounded by steep forested terrain.

• Viewing tips: The lake sits in a steep, mountainous setting and is best viewed from the dam and nearby mountain roads; weather can change quickly, so come prepared for wind and rain.

Zavoj Lake is in central Serbia and is best reached by car via regional roads from nearby towns such as Zaječar or Niš. Public transport options are limited; travelers should plan a private transfer or check local bus routes that serve lakeside settlements.

• Do not attempt to access hydropower infrastructure areas without permission; local authorities regulate the lake area.
• Bring binoculars for birdwatching-the surrounding hills are good for raptors and wetland species.
• If visiting in winter expect cold temperatures and possible access limitations due to snow on surrounding roads.
