Zard-Kuh is a high massif in the Zagros Mountains of western Iran, located in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province; its highest summits rise to about 4,221 meters. The range is a prominent local landmark and contains perennial snowfields and small glaciers at its highest elevations.

Alpine terrain, steep limestone and crystalline ridges, and high-altitude plateaus dominate the area. Hikers and climbers go for high routes and ridge traverses; valley approaches are used by pastoralists and for access to mountain lakes and cirques. Snow cover can persist into summer above 3,000 meters, affecting route choices and timing.

The massif has long been used seasonally by Bakhtiari pastoral communities for summer grazing and transhumance. Geological uplift and glacial sculpting over millennia produced the steep peaks and deep valleys visible today.

Zard-Kuh sits within the central Zagros chain in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province, forming part of the Bakhtiari highlands. It rises above surrounding plateaus and river valleys and is approached from valley roads that lead up into the high pastures.

  • Glacial remnants: Glacial cirques and permanent snowfields remain above 3,000 meters in some sheltered valleys, influencing local water supply and summer hiking conditions.
  • Best season: Best access and climbing conditions are in late spring to early autumn when routes are free of deep snow and local pastures are active.
