Zagreb Synagogue
Synagogue Former synagogue in Zagreb with Holocaust memorial
A historic synagogue in Zagreb tied to the city’s Jewish community and wartime history; visitors encounter memorials, commemorative plaques and guided tours about Jewish heritage.
The Zagreb Synagogue was the spiritual and civic heart of Croatia’s largest Jewish community before the Second World War. Located in the Upper Town, it was a grand Moorish-revival building completed in the late 1860s and long enough to host choir concerts and community assemblies. What remains now is absence - a patch of memory marked by a plaque and the stubborn grooves in cobblestones where citizens once filed past its doors.
The synagogue’s story is blunt and municipal: in 1941 the building was seized and then demolished under the Ustaše regime, an act meant to erase a people along with their architecture. The destruction did not go unnoticed; foreign diplomats and local writers recorded the loss at the time. In the decades since, Zagreb’s Jewish community, small but persistent, has rebuilt life in scattered places - a kosher bakery here, a cultural center there - while the synagogue’s ghost anchors annual remembrances and the city’s war-time history walks.
Walking Praška Street today, the human details remain stubborn. An old bench bears a backrest carved decades ago by an artisan who may have once walked past the synagogue’s doors; a gray-haired tour guide still points out the same faded stone where children used to play. The site is less a monument of marble than a local ritual: people pause, read a plaque, and then keep moving through a city that remembers by omission as much as by name.
How to Get to Zagreb Synagogue #
The former synagogue site is in Zagreb’s Upper Town (Gornji Grad). From Ban Jelačić Square, walk up Radićeva/Praška Street (about 10-15 minutes) or take tram lines 6 or 11 to the Kaptol stop and walk north. The area is compact and best explored on foot.
Tips for Visiting Zagreb Synagogue #
- Look for the bronze plaque and the carved Star of David at the synagogue's former site on Praška Street - local Zagreb guides still point them out.
- Visit on a weekday morning when the surrounding Kaptol neighborhood is quiet; the memory walk between the municipal Jewish cemetery and the synagogue site is especially solemn then.
- The Jewish community center nearby sometimes hosts exhibitions or concerts - check local event listings in advance.
