Zaculeu

Zaculeu is a pre-Columbian archaeological site on a low hill near the modern city of Huehuetenango in western Guatemala, once the capital of the Mam Maya polity. The site is notable for its compact acropolis of masonry platforms and pyramids, many of which were restored in the 20th century.

Today the site presents a sequence of terraces, plazas and stepped platforms around central courtyards; visitors walk between several restored masonry structures and view exposed foundations and masonry techniques. Interpretive signage and a small on-site display explain elements of Mam culture and Spanish contact; the layout is compact and walkable in a single visit.

The settlement was the political center of the Mam people and remained occupied into the period of Spanish contact. Spanish forces captured the site during the conquest of the highlands in the early 16th century, after which indigenous political structures were disrupted and the site declined.

Zaculeu sits on a hill just outside Huehuetenango in Guatemala’s western highlands, within short driving distance of the modern city and its road connections to the rest of the western highlands.
