Main image

A scenic viewpoint in eastern California within Death Valley National Park, overlooking sculpted badlands and sedimentary formations.

A compact overlook offering panoramic views across eroded badlands and alluvial fans, with stark color contrasts and textured ridges that attract photographers and day visitors. The viewpoint is reached by a short walk from the parking area and is often visited at sunrise and sunset.

Formed by long-term erosion of lake and fan sediments, the badland landscape exposed at the viewpoint records layers of sediment and volcanic ash deposited and later carved by wind and water. The site has been part of Death Valley National Park since the park’s formation and is managed for public access and viewpoint safety.

Located on the eastern side of Death Valley in California, the viewpoint is accessible from the main park roads and is near other short scenic stops and trailheads within the national park.

  • Best times: Sunrise and sunset are the most popular times to visit for photography, when low-angle light accentuates the badland shapes and colors.
  • Access: A short paved trail and viewpoint area provide safe access from the parking area; no extensive hiking is required to reach the overlook.

How to Get to Zabriskie Point #

Zabriskie Point is inside Death Valley National Park and is reached by car via CA‑190 (Badwater Road) within the park. There is a paved parking area immediately adjacent to the viewpoint; the short paved trail from the parking area to the overlook is only a few hundred metres (a 5-10 minute walk). From the Furnace Creek area it is a short drive into the viewpoint (roughly a 10-20 minute drive depending on exact start point in the park).

Tips for Visiting Zabriskie Point #

  • Go at sunrise (or just before) for the best light on the badlands and to avoid the mid‑day crowds and heat - parking is smallest at the overlook so early arrival helps.
  • Use the official Zabriskie Point turnout off Badwater Road; the paved path from the lot leads directly to the main viewpoint, and from there you can continue on the Badlands Loop/Manly Beacon routes to escape the crowds.
  • Avoid visiting in the height of summer midday when temperatures can become extreme; if you want a longer, quieter hike, head into Golden Canyon or Badlands Loop rather than staying at the main overlook.
