Yueyang Tower

Yueyang Tower is an ancient Chinese tower on the shore of Dongting Lake in Yueyang, Hunan Province, notable for its traditional multi-eaved architecture and long cultural history. It is one of the classical towers of China linked to major works of Chinese prose literature.

The tower offers elevated views across Dongting Lake and the adjacent riverine landscape, and the precinct contains buildings and terraces used by visitors for sightseeing and cultural events. Its fame rests largely on the celebrated Song-dynasty essay by Fan Zhongyan, which praises the tower and articulates civic ideals.

The existing structure has been rebuilt and restored at various times across Chinese history, with its present form reflecting later reconstructions that preserve traditional architectural style. The site has served as a scenic and ceremonial landmark for Yueyang for many centuries.

Geographically it sits on the lakeshore in Yueyang city, Hunan Province, overlooking Dongting Lake and the lake’s marshy plains to the south and east.
