Ypacaraí Lake Lake

A freshwater lake in Paraguay located east of the capital region and known as a local recreational and cultural landmark.

Sandy and reed-lined shores, lakeside towns and promenades that support boating, swimming and local leisure activities during the warmer months. The lake’s shoreline hosts restaurants and informal swimming spots used by residents and regional visitors.

The lake has long been part of the surrounding communities’ economic and social life and is referenced in Paraguayan music and popular culture. Patterns of use and water conditions have changed over time with local development and seasonal variation.

Located inland in Paraguay’s central region, the lake lies near towns that form its immediate shore communities and is a short drive from the national capital area.

• Lakeside towns and promenades: Shoreline promenades and small towns on the lake’s edge that host local recreation and boat activity in season.

Ypacaraí Lake sits east of Asunción on the shore towns of Ypacaraí and San Bernardino. From Asunción drive east (about 30-40 km depending on which shore town you’re visiting) along Ruta 2 (PY-02) to the lakeside towns; there are regular intercity buses and minibuses from Asunción’s main bus terminals to San Bernardino and Ypacaraí. Once in the town you can walk from the bus stop to the lakefront (typically a few hundred metres).

• Visit early on weekdays (early morning is best) to enjoy calmer water and quieter lakeside promenades in San Bernardino, which is the main access town for Ypacaraí and has the most amenities.
• Take a short boat trip or arrange a local guide to explore reedbeds and small islands-these spots are quieter and better for birdwatching than the busy municipal beaches most tourists stick to.
• Avoid Paraguayan public holidays and weekend afternoons when local crowds and picnic traffic make lakeside parking and restaurants very busy.
