Yoyogi Park
Park Large Tokyo park popular for cherry blossoms
Large urban park beside Harajuku and Meiji Shrine offering broad lawns, forested walks, cherry blossoms in spring, weekend street performers and cosplay crowds; visitors use it for picnics, people‑watching and easy access to Shibuya.
Yoyogi Park is a major public park in central Tokyo, adjacent to Harajuku and Meiji Shrine and covering roughly 54.1 hectares. It is a large urban green space used for recreation, events and seasonal viewing.
Open lawns, ponds, wooded paths and sports facilities are spread across the park, and the site is particularly busy during cherry blossom season and on weekends when groups gather for music, markets and hobbyist meetups. The park hosts concerts and festivals and offers wide, open areas suitable for picnics and informal sports.
Much of the land was previously used as a military parade ground and later as U.S. army housing after World War II; it was redeveloped and opened to the public in the 1960s. The layout and facilities were established to serve both recreational and event uses.
Yoyogi Park sits in central Tokyo between the neighborhoods of Shibuya and Shinjuku, immediately west of Meiji Shrine and within walking distance of Harajuku station. Its urban setting makes it highly accessible to residents and visitors.

- Event Plaza: A paved event plaza and stage area used for festivals, markets and public gatherings throughout the year.
- Forested areas and paths: Wooded sections and walking paths that form shaded routes through the park and link to trails around the site.
- Sports and recreation zone: Sports facilities and a cycling course used by recreational athletes and for community sports programs.
How to Get to Yoyogi Park #
Yoyogi Park sits between Harajuku and Shibuya. The easiest way is by rail: take the JR Yamanote Line to Harajuku Station (park entrance is a 1-5 minute walk) or Tokyo Metro to Meiji-jingumae Station (Chiyoda and Fukutoshin lines), also about a few minutes on foot. To the north you can also use Yoyogi-koen Station on the Toei Oedo Line (a short walk). By car it is in central Tokyo, roughly west of Tokyo Station; expect 15-25 minutes by taxi depending on traffic.
Tips for Visiting Yoyogi Park #
- Visit early on weekday mornings (before 9:30) to enjoy the broad lawns and forested promenades with far fewer visitors than the busy Harajuku/Takeshita area; weekends-especially Sundays-draw large crowds, street performers and cosplayers near the Harajuku Gate.
- Enter from the JR Harajuku Station (Harajuku Gate) if you want quick access to the east lawn and youth culture zones; use Yoyogi-koen or Yoyogi-Hachiman stations for a quieter, more residential stroll into the park's wooded western sections.
- Many visitors overlook the short, peaceful forest path that connects the park with Meiji Shrine-take that route to move from the park's open spaces into the shrine's shaded cedar walkway and avoid the busiest pedestrian corridors.
Best Time to Visit Yoyogi Park #
