Yongdingmen

Yongdingmen is the historic southern gate on Beijing’s central axis, originally built as part of the city’s Ming-era walls and rebuilt in modern times. The structure marks the traditional southern entrance to old Beijing’s inner urban area.

The original gate was removed in the mid-20th century during urban changes and a reconstructed gate and plaza were completed in the early 21st century to restore the visual and ceremonial terminus on the city’s central axis. The site now functions as both a historical landmark and a public space with exhibitions about the city’s gating and walls.

Yongdingmen sits on Beijing’s southward central axis, south of Tiananmen and within the municipality’s central urban area, where it forms a visible historic reference point in the city’s modern streetscape.
