Yesemek Quarry and Sculpture Workshop
Archaeological Site Ancient Hittite quarry with dozens of unfinished sculptures
Hittite‑period basalt quarry and outdoor workshop in Kilis Province with unfinished monumental sculptures; visitors study ancient carving techniques among exposed sculptural blocks.
Yesemek Quarry and Sculpture Workshop is an archaeological open-air quarry and stone-carving complex in Kilis Province, southeastern Turkey, with origins in the late Bronze and early Iron Age periods (associated with Hittite and Neo-Hittite activity).
The site contains numerous in situ and displaced basalt blocks and carved pieces that show stages of production from rough quarried blocks to partially finished monumental sculptures. Highlights include several animal and hybrid figures carved in the round and many unfinished works that illustrate ancient stoneworking techniques.
Archaeological research attributes the quarrying and carving activity to Hittite and successor polities in the region; the site was used as a production centre for monumental stone statuary and then abandoned, leaving unfinished works on the slopes.
Located near the village of Yesemek in Kilis Province of southeastern Turkey, the complex sits within a rural landscape near the Syrian border and is accessible from regional roads as an open archaeological preserve.
- Stone type: The carved material at the site is predominantly local basalt, which influenced the scale and durability of the sculptures.
- Open-air exposure: The site is exposed and largely open-air, so many features are visible on the ground rather than inside a building.
What to See #
- Quarry face: An open-air basalt quarry face where raw blocks were cut and roughly shaped before final carving, showing tool marks and extraction points.
- Workshop terraces: Terraced workshop areas and work surfaces where stone was dressed and assembled into larger sculptures; many unfinished pieces remain in situ.
- Sculpture fragments: Clusters of finished and unfinished sculpture fragments including animal figures and human-headed beasts that illustrate production stages.
- Lions and sphinxes: Monumental stone figures such as lion and sphinx-type sculptures found at the site, surviving as both complete and partial examples.
