Ýdra City
Greek island port in Saronic Gulf, car-free
Stone mansions ring a cosmopolitan harbor where donkeys and water taxis still rule. Visitors arrive for clifftop walks, museums in restored merchant houses, and seafood tavernas that open onto small mooring-lined bays.
Why Visit Ýdra?#
The island of Hydra charms visitors with a car-free harbor, narrow stone alleys, and a preserved network of 19th-century mansions and manses along the Saronic Gulf. Walking the waterfront and climbing to the island’s artistic ateliers reveals why painters and writers long made Hydra a retreat; fresh seafood and ouzo are part of the daily rhythm at its tavernas. Daytrippers from Athens mix with slow-paced island life, while seasonal festivals and local maritime traditions give cultural depth.

How to Get to Ýdra#
Hydra is an island accessible only by ferry from Piraeus (Athens). Fly into Athens (ATH), transfer to Piraeus by bus, metro or taxi, then take a scheduled ferry or high-speed service to Hydra.
Athens Eleftherios Venizelos Airport (ATH): ATH is the main airport for reaching Hydra (Ύδρα). From ATH to Piraeus port you can take the X96 airport bus (about 60-90 minutes) or a taxi/private transfer (around 40-60 minutes). From Piraeus you catch a ferry to Hydra.
No direct flights to Hydra: Hydra has no airport; access is by sea from the mainland or nearby islands.
Train: Use Athens’ suburban rail and metro to reach Piraeus: from the airport take Metro Line 3 to Monastiraki and transfer to Line 1 to Piraeus (or use suburban rail connections). The metro/proastiakos options take longer but are reliable for reaching Piraeus.
Bus / Ferry: The X96 airport express bus runs direct ATH-Piraeus (fare approx €6, 60-90 min). From Piraeus there are conventional ferries and high-speed hydrofoils to Hydra; fast ferries typically take around 1.5-2 hours and conventional ferries can take about 2-3 hours. Ferry operators include Hellenic Seaways and Saronic Ferries with fares roughly €24-30 for high-speed services and €11-16 for conventional ferries depending on season and operator.
How to Get Around Ýdra#
To get to Hydra you must combine air travel to ATH with a surface transfer to Piraeus and a scheduled ferry. Use the X96 bus or metro for the most cost-effective transfer; taxis are faster but pricier. Ferries vary by speed and price.
- Airport bus (X96) (€6) - The X96 express bus links Athens Airport and Piraeus port directly - a reliable, economical way to reach the ferry terminals. Journey time is typically 60-90 minutes depending on traffic; buy tickets at the airport bus kiosk or from the driver.
- Metro / suburban rail (€10 (airport-to-city flat fare)) - Take Metro Line 3 from ATH to Monastiraki then transfer to Line 1 to Piraeus; or use suburban rail connections where available. This is reliable though involves a transfer and luggage handling; allow 60-90 minutes.
- Taxi / private transfer (€35-60) - A direct taxi or private transfer from ATH to Piraeus saves a transfer but is more expensive; useful if you have heavy luggage or a tight ferry connection. Journey times depend on traffic (approx 40-60 minutes).
- Ferry / hydrofoil (€11-30) - Ferries from Piraeus to Hydra run multiple times daily; high-speed hydrofoils are faster (about 1.5-2 hours) but cost more, while conventional ferries take longer (around 2-3 hours) and are cheaper. Book in high season and check operator timetables (Hellenic Seaways, Saronic lines).
- Walking - Hydra town is car-free and highly walkable; expect to carry luggage across cobbled streets and steps from the port. Pack light and be prepared to use donkey transport for heavy luggage if needed.
