Ybycuí National Park is a protected area in Paraguay’s Paraguarí Department established to conserve remnant subtropical forest in the Paraguayan interior. The park contains forested hills, streams and recreational trails used by local visitors.

Facilities are modest and the park is primarily visited for short hikes, birdwatching and picnics rather than long-distance trekking. Infrastructure includes marked trails and local access points near the town of Ybycuí.

The protected area was established to safeguard regional biodiversity and water sources, and it supports a mix of native flora and fauna adapted to the subtropical environment. Local management focuses on conservation and low-impact recreation.

Geographically the park lies in central Paraguay’s Paraguarí Department, close to the town of Ybycuí and within driving distance of Asunción for day trips.

How to Get to Ybycuí National Park #

Ybycuí National Park is reached from Asunción by road: take Ruta Nacional No. 1 (toward Paraguarí) and then follow the local Paraguarí-Ybycuí roads to the town of Ybycuí. The park entrance is a few kilometres from the town and is normally accessed by car or by regional buses/taxis from Paraguarí or Asunción; expect a roughly 1.5-2 hour drive from Asunción depending on route and traffic. Once at the town or park entrance, trails and viewpoints are within short walking distance.

  • Start at the main park entrance near Ybycuí town in the morning to see the Salto Cristal waterfall with fewer people and better light; ask at the visitor center for the shortest trail if you're limited on time.
  • Don't skip the park's 19th-century ironworks ruins (La Rosada/Ferrería) - the historical industrial complex and its small on-site exhibits are easy to miss but give important context to the landscape.
