Yarmouth Castle
Castle 16th-century coastal fort on the Isle of Wight
A Tudor artillery fort on the Isle of Wight, constructed as part of Henry VIII’s coastal defences; open to visitors for military architecture, coastal views and local history.
Yarmouth Castle is a small 16th-century coastal artillery fort on the quay at Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight. It was constructed in the mid-1500s as part of England’s coastal defences and overlooks the entrance to Yarmouth harbour.
The compact fort features gun platforms and stone defensive walls positioned to command the harbour approach; its scale reflects the need to cover a narrow channel rather than a large anchorage. It is managed as a historic site and is accessible to visitors who can inspect the ramparts and gun-positions.
Built in the Tudor period to guard against seaborne attack, the castle has undergone repairs and alterations over subsequent centuries to adapt to changing artillery technology and coastal conditions. The original purpose as a harbour-defence fortification has remained its defining role.
The castle sits directly on the seafront in the town of Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight, facing the Solent. It is adjacent to the harbour and quay and is a short walk from local town amenities.
- Harbour location: Located on the waterfront at Yarmouth harbour, the fort offers close-up views of the harbour mouth and the Solent coastline from its gun-positions.
