Xishan Forest Park

Xishan Forest Park is the western hills forest park west of Kunming in Yunnan Province, occupying the wooded ridges above the western shore of Dianchi Lake. It is known for cliffside viewpoints, temples and carved grottoes.

The park includes cliff walks and viewing platforms that look east over Dianchi Lake and the city of Kunming, temples set into the hillside and a network of hiking trails. Key attractions include the carved Dragon Gate cliff complex and several historic temple sites reached by stairways and paths.

Temple construction and cliffside carvings in the western hills date back centuries, with the area used historically for religious retreats and scenic viewpoints. In modern times the hills have been managed as a municipal forest park to preserve scenery and provide recreation.

The park occupies the hills on the western shore of Dianchi Lake, approximately west of central Kunming in Yunnan Province, and serves as a near‑urban natural area for the city.

• Viewpoints and timing: Best viewing conditions for panoramas over Dianchi Lake are in clear weather at sunrise or late afternoon when visibility is highest.
• Access and fitness: Steep stone stairways and cliffside paths are common in the park; a cable car is available to reduce climbing on some routes.
