Xanthos
Archaeological Site Ancient Lycian city with extensive archaeological ruins
On Turkey’s Lycian coast, Xanthos preserves Hellenistic and Roman ruins-rock-cut tombs, a theater and city walls-listed with nearby Letoon as a UNESCO site. Archaeology and coastal drives attract most visitors.
Xanthos is the ruins of the ancient capital of Lycia in southwestern Turkey, located near the modern village of Kınık in Antalya Province. The site preserves a mix of Lycian, Hellenistic and Roman remains and is noted for its funerary architecture.
Visitors explore terraces of tombs, the city acropolis and the remains of streets, temples and a theatre; the necropolis contains pillar tombs and rock-cut sarcophagi characteristic of Lycian funerary practice. Sculptural fragments and reliefs once from Xanthos are now dispersed among museum collections, but the in-situ monuments remain significant.
Historically Xanthos served as a political and religious centre in Lycia from the first millennium BCE and was repeatedly rebuilt and reoccupied through Hellenistic and Roman periods. The archaeological record shows continuity of civic life and a rich funerary tradition.
The archaeological site sits inland on the banks of the Xanthos (Eşen) River near Kınık, in the coastal region of southwestern Turkey, within reachable distance from the Lycian coast and regional towns.
- World Heritage: Inscribed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage site Xanthos-Letoon for its well-preserved Lycian monuments and funerary architecture.
What to See #

Tips for Visiting Xanthos #
- Visit early in the morning to avoid the midday heat and to have clearer views of the acropolis, rock tombs and ruins before visitor numbers rise.
- Combine Xanthos with nearby Letoon on the same trip - the two UNESCO sites are a short distance apart and together give a fuller picture of Lycian religious and civic life.
- Ask at the local information point in Kınık for the main entrance and short walks that reveal the funerary architecture; many visitors focus on the obvious ruins and miss smaller carved tomb façades and inscriptions.
