The Wuyi Mountains are a range in northern Fujian province in southeast China, noted for both high biodiversity and an important tea-cultivation landscape. The range was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999 for its combined cultural and natural values.

Steep sandstone peaks, narrow gorges and river valleys form the main scenic attractions. The Jiuqu (Nine-Bend) River winds through deep gorges and is commonly experienced by short raft trips; visitors also go to cliffside viewpoints, rock formations and historic tea gardens where the famous Da Hong Pao tea grows. There are extensive forested slopes and marked hiking trails that link peaks and temple sites.

Human use has combined with the natural landscape for centuries - cliff temples, historic inscriptions and longstanding tea cultivation are part of the site’s cultural layer. The area is now protected under national reserve status and by its UNESCO designation.

Geographically the range sits in northwestern Fujian province near the county-level city of Wuyishan. The terrain is rugged, with steep valleys and peaks that dominate the local landscape.

  • Access point: Access concentrates on the county-level city of Wuyishan, which serves as the main gateway and base for tours and river trips.
  • Tea heritage: Home to the famous Oolong cultivar Da Hong Pao, with historic tea gardens and cliff-side tea terraces still visible in the scenic area.

What to See #

  • Jiuqu (Nine-Bend) River: A sinuous, canyon-cut river that runs through the core scenic area and is commonly navigated on short bamboo-raft trips; the valley is lined with steep sandstone peaks and cliffside viewpoints.
  • Mount Huanggang: Highest peak of the range, rising to about 2,158 metres and forming the principal high ridge visitors may trek to for panoramic views.
  • Dahongpao tea area: Rock outcrops, terraced slopes and gardens associated with the cultivation of the famous rock tea variety Da Hong Pao, located on the steep cliffs and valley sides.

How to Get to Wuyi Mountains #

Take the train or long‑distance coach to Wuyishan (武夷山) city in Fujian, then transfer by local bus or taxi to the Wuyi Mountains scenic area. The scenic area lies outside the urban center, so expect a road transfer of roughly 20-30 km that takes about 30-40 minutes by car or tourist shuttle from Wuyishan city.

Tips for Visiting Wuyi Mountains #

  • Buy your park ticket and shuttle/bamboo-raft reservations online in advance for high season and public holidays to avoid long lines at the Wuyishan Scenic Area entrances.
  • Start early on the Nine‑Bend Stream (Jiuquxi) to enjoy the bamboo-raft section before tour groups arrive, and head up to Tianyou Peak (Heavenly Tour Peak) either at sunrise or in the early morning for the classic misty mountain views.
  • Avoid Chinese national holidays and weekends if you want quieter trails; many visitors miss the surrounding tea‑plantation trails and traditional tea houses - slot an afternoon visit to a local tea farm to see that aspect of the landscape.
