Wikala of Qawsun
Monument Medieval caravanserai complex in Cairo's historic district
Historic wikala (commercial caravanserai) in medieval Cairo’s old city; attracts those interested in Islamic architecture and the surrounding markets and streets.
Wikala of Qawsun is a 14th-century Mamluk caravanserai (wikala) in historic Cairo, built by the amir Qawsun in the 1330s. It served as a commercial complex combining ground-floor shops with upper-floor storage and lodging for merchants.
The building features a central courtyard surrounded by multi-storey arcades and street-facing storefronts, with access arranged to support goods storage and short-term merchant accommodation. Visitors encounter the courtyard form and the urban commercial arrangement rather than large exterior monuments.
Constructed under the Mamluk sultanate, the wikala was commissioned by the amir Qawsun in the first half of the 14th century and functioned as part of Cairo’s merchant infrastructure. Over time the complex has remained part of the dense medieval fabric of the city and has been subject to conservation efforts typical for historic buildings in Cairo.
The structure sits within Cairo’s medieval commercial district in the historic centre of the city, among other Mamluk-era buildings and traditional market streets.
- Architecture: A surviving example of Mamluk urban caravanserai architecture, notable for its multi-storey arrangement with commercial ground floors and upper-level storage and lodging.
- Layout: Central courtyard plan with street-level shops and upper-floor rooms, typical of 14th-century wikalas in Cairo's medieval commercial districts.
