Wikala of Ibrahim Agha
Monument Restored caravanserai in Cairo used for commerce
An Ottoman-period merchant lodging in Cairo’s old district, notable for a stone entrance and commercial layout; often visited alongside walking tours of al-Muizz.
Wikala of Ibrahim Agha is a historic wikala located in Cairo’s traditional commercial quarter, forming part of the dense ensemble of merchant buildings around Khan el-Khalili. It exemplifies the compact, multi-storey market inns that once supported urban and regional trade.
The interior organization centers on a courtyard with ground-floor storage and workshops and upper-floor cells or rooms that served as temporary lodgings for traders and their goods. The façade and entrance often present ornamental stone or woodwork facing the street, with practical loading access to the courtyard.
These buildings were constructed for merchant use and later adapted for more varied urban functions as the pattern of regional trade changed. Many survive today in altered condition, with original structural patterns still visible in plan and elevation.
Positioned in Cairo’s historic market district, the wikala is close to major historic streets and monuments of Islamic Cairo and is best visited on foot as part of a walking route through the souks.
- Function: Built and used as an urban caravanserai serving merchants, with an internal courtyard and stacked commercial lodging rooms typical of Cairo wikalas.
