Wikala and Sabil-Kuttab of Sultan Qaytbay

The Wikala and Sabil-Kuttab of Sultan Qaytbay form a 15th-century Mamluk complex in historic Cairo commissioned by Sultan al-Ashraf Qaytbay. The site pairs a commercial caravanserai with a charitable sabil-kuttab, combining revenue-generating and public welfare functions in a single urban ensemble.

Architectural highlights include a central courtyard serving the wikala with upper-level chambers for lodging and storage, and a richly articulated street facade for the sabil that supplied free water and housed a Quranic school above. The ensemble exemplifies late Mamluk stonework detail and urban building types adapted to dense medieval streets.

The complex was built in the late 1400s under Qaytbay and formed part of the sultan’s broader program of public and religious building in Cairo. Over subsequent centuries the buildings have seen changes in use and repair typical of historic urban structures but remain cited examples of Mamluk civic architecture.
