Wikala and sabil-kuttab of Jamal al-Din al-Dhahabi

Wikala and sabil-kuttab of Jamal al-Din al-Dhahabi is a multifunctional building in Cairo’s historic center that combines merchant accommodation with a public fountain and a small kuttab (elementary Qur’anic school). The combination of commercial, charitable and educational functions is a known feature of Cairo’s urban architecture.

The wikala portion provides ground-floor storage and upper-level lodging rooms around a courtyard, while the sabil offers water at street level and the kuttab occupies a compact upper chamber used historically for basic religious instruction. The street façade typically highlights the sabil and entrance features.

The complex served merchants and the local community by combining trade infrastructure with civic amenities; over time such buildings were often repurposed for shops, workshops and other urban uses while retaining their mixed-function layout.

The building is located in Historic Cairo within Cairo Governorate among other market structures and narrow lanes, and is best reached on foot from nearby bazaars.
