Wikala al-Muhammadayn Monument

Wikala al-Muhammadayn is an urban caravanserai located in Cairo’s historic commercial quarter and is one of several wikalas clustered in the area. It represents the small-scale merchant architecture that supported trade in the old city.

The building follows the conventional wikala arrangement: storage and loading at street level with accommodation for merchants on the floors above, organized around a central courtyard. Architectural elements to note include masonry facades, regular rows of openings and timberwork on balconies or windows.

Originally constructed to provide a secure place for goods and temporary lodging for traders, it later adapted to local economic changes and frequently housed workshops and shops at street level. Many such structures have undergone repairs or partial restoration while remaining integrated in the market streets.
