Wikala al-Matyali
Monument Historic merchant caravanserai and storage building in Cairo
Wikala al-Matyali stands amid Cairo’s medieval commercial quarter, showing multi-level storage and lodging design; visitors pair it with walking tours of Islamic-era monuments.
Wikala al-Matyali is a historic wikala (urban caravanserai) in Cairo’s medieval core, forming part of the city’s traditional commercial architecture. It is one of several small wikalas concentrated in the area that served merchant activity.
The building presents the functional layout common to wikalas: a street-facing facade with service openings, a central courtyard, ground-floor storage and loading spaces and upper rooms that once housed travelling merchants. Expect to see masonry courtyards, wooden balconies or mashrabiya elements and adjacent narrow lanes rather than a large forecourt.
Wikala al-Matyali was built to serve as a combined warehouse and lodging for merchants; over time such buildings in Cairo were reused for workshops, storage and small-scale commerce as trade patterns changed. Many examples have survived in altered form within the historic market quarter.
The wikala sits within Historic Cairo in Cairo Governorate, in the dense old city close to other wikalas and market streets. The site is best reached on foot from nearby bazaars and streets in the medieval district.
- Architecture: A typical caravanserai plan with a ground-floor storage and loading area and upper-level lodging rooms around a central courtyard, useful for photography of historic urban architecture.
- Access: Often integrated into the dense fabric of Historic Cairo, access is usually from narrow streets rather than large plazas, so arrive on foot from nearby market streets.
