White Sands National Park in southern New Mexico protects an extensive gypsum dune field, the largest of its kind on Earth, and was redesignated as a national park in December 2019 after decades as a national monument.

A shifting landscape of white gypsum dunes dominates the park, with broad, open expanses used for walking, photography and recreational sledding on the sand. Trails and designated areas allow visitors to explore the dunes’ surface and the adjacent interdune habitats.

The area was originally protected as White Sands National Monument in 1933; in 2019 it was elevated to national park status to recognise and protect the unique gypsum dune ecosystem and cultural resources.

Located in the Tularosa Basin of southern New Mexico, the park lies between the cities of Alamogordo and Las Cruces and is accessed by road from regional highways; the landscape is an open desert basin ringed by mountain ranges.

  • Dune field and sledding: The site protects the world's largest gypsum dune field and offers seasonal opportunities to sled on the white sand using plastic sleds available locally.
