How to Get to Whitby#

Whitby is reached most easily by rail on the Esk Valley Line (Whitby railway station) or by road from nearby airports. The nearest airports with useful services are Teesside International (MME) and the larger Newcastle (NCL) or Leeds Bradford (LBA), but most visitors arrive by train or car.

By Air

Teesside International (MME): The closest airport for Whitby by distance; there are limited scheduled flights. From Teesside you need a taxi or rental car to reach Whitby (drive about 50-70 minutes). Taxis typically cost in the region of £45-£70; car hire is the most flexible option.

Newcastle International (NCL) / Leeds Bradford (LBA): Both are larger airports with more services. From Newcastle Airport expect around 1h15-1h45 driving to Whitby; from Leeds Bradford roughly 1h30-2h depending on traffic. Both airports require a mix of train and local bus/taxi for public transport connections - taxis and car hire are the simplest options for door-to-door travel.

By Train & Bus

Train: Whitby is served by Whitby railway station on the Esk Valley Line (Middlesbrough-Whitby) via Nunthorpe and Battersby. Typical journey time from Middlesbrough to Whitby is about 1h-1h20; connections from Darlington or York require a change at Middlesbrough or Nunthorpe. Trains are local regional services (Northern/East Coast regional connections).

Bus: Local and regional buses (operators include Arriva and local independent companies) connect Whitby with nearby towns such as Scarborough, Middlesbrough and Pickering. Journey times vary (Scarborough ~45-60 minutes, Middlesbrough ~1h-1h30) and typical single fares within the area are usually a few pounds (£2-£8 depending on distance and operator).

How to Get Around Whitby#

Whitby is easiest to reach by train on the Esk Valley Line or by car from nearby airports; buses fill in local connections. For getting around, combine walking in town with local buses or a hire car for wider exploration.

  • Train (Esk Valley Line) (£5-£15) - The Esk Valley Line links Whitby with Middlesbrough (and onward services to Darlington and York). Trains are scenic but infrequent outside peak times - check timetables in advance. The service is the best public-transport option for reaching Whitby without a car; expect single journeys of around an hour from Middlesbrough.
  • Regional Bus (£2-£8) - Local buses connect Whitby to Scarborough, Pickering and Middlesbrough; operators include Arriva and local independents. Buses are useful for short hops and coastal routes, but service frequency can be limited on Sundays and evenings. Buy tickets from the driver or via operator apps where available.
  • Taxi / Private Transfer (£35-£90) - Taxis and private transfers are the most convenient way to get to Whitby from nearby airports or train stations when schedules don’t match. From Teesside or Middlesbrough expect roughly 50-80 minute drives; fares vary by operator and time of day.
  • Car / Rental (£25+/day (rental) + fuel) - Hiring a car gives the most flexibility for exploring the coast and North York Moors around Whitby. Roads are generally good but narrow in places; parking in town is available but can be busy in summer. Fuel and parking costs should be factored in.
  • Walking - Whitby town centre and harbour are compact and best explored on foot. Streets around the abbey and harbour are pedestrian-friendly but can be steep (notably the 199 steps up to the abbey).

Look for Whitby jet jewellery, seaside gifts and galleries; there are also small food shops and fishmongers selling local catch. You’ll find occasional street markets and seasonal stalls (summer and holiday weekends busiest). For a wider range of shops head to nearby larger towns.

Nightlife in Whitby#

Whitby’s evening scene is mostly pub- and gig-oriented: cosy pubs, seafood restaurants that stay open late and occasional live-music nights. The town livens up during events such as Whitby Goth Weekend and summer festival evenings. If you want nightclubs or late-night venues you’ll need to look to larger towns; for most visitors the harbour pubs and Pavilion are the main options.
