Whitby Abbey
Church Gothic cliff-top ruins overlooking Whitby and the North Sea
Perched on a cliff above Whitby harbour, the ruined abbey offers coastal views, Gothic ruins and a museum; visitors combine the site with fish-and-chip shops and seaside walks.
Whitby Abbey is a ruined medieval monastery perched on the East Cliff above the coastal town of Whitby in North Yorkshire, England. The site was originally founded in 657 AD by St Hilda and is noted for its early medieval significance.
The abbey’s dramatic stone ruins dominate the headland and give extensive views across Whitby harbour and out to the North Sea; the cliff-top ruins and churchyard are the primary attractions. A well‑used approach from the town includes a stone stairway of 199 steps that leads up to the abbey area and nearby St Mary’s Church. English Heritage operates a visitor centre beside the site with exhibitions about the abbey and the Synod of Whitby.
An Anglo‑Saxon monastery was established on the site in 657, and the Synod of Whitby took place there in 664. The monastery was later re-established under Norman patronage in the late 11th century; the visible Gothic ruins date mainly from the 13th and 14th centuries. The abbey was dissolved in 1539 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries and subsequently fell into ruin.
The abbey stands on the East Cliff above the mouth of the River Esk, overlooking Whitby harbour on the North Yorkshire coast. It is accessed on foot from the town and is a prominent landmark visible from the harbour and surrounding shoreline.
- 199 steps: A stone stairway of 199 steps climbs from Whitby town to the churchyard and abbey headland, providing a popular and direct route from the harbour.
- Bram Stoker connection: Strong literary association with Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula, which drew on the abbey's dramatic appearance and the town's coastal setting.
What to See #
- Ruined Abbey Church: The main ruined abbey church on the headland with surviving east and west ranges built largely in the 13th and 14th centuries; the ruins form the principal visitor area and offer panoramic views over Whitby harbour and the North Sea.
- St Mary's Church and the 199 Steps: St Mary's Church and the stone stairway of 199 steps that link the harbour and town to the cliff-top churchyard and abbey approaches.
- Visitor centre (English Heritage): The English Heritage visitor centre and exhibition beside the site, offering tickets, interpretation panels and a small shop for visitors to the abbey.
How to Get to Whitby Abbey #
Whitby Abbey sits on the East Cliff above Whitby harbour. Take a train to Whitby station (services from Middlesbrough/Scarborough) and walk about 15-20 minutes up through the town or climb the famous 199 steps from the harbour to the abbey ruins. By road the A171 runs into Whitby from the direction of Scarborough; there is short on‑street parking and local buses/taxis if you prefer not to walk the steps.
Tips for Visiting Whitby Abbey #
- Arrive early morning or late afternoon to avoid peak coach-group times in summer and to get the best light for photos of the abbey ruins against the sea.
- Approach the abbey from the West Cliff via the 199 Steps for the classic viewpoint and dramatic overview of the ruins and harbour - this route also gives access to St Mary's graveyard viewpoints that many day visitors skip.
- If you can, check English Heritage opening times and any event closures in advance; the site can be busier on market days and when cruise-ship excursions visit nearby Whitby.
Best Time to Visit Whitby Abbey #
Late spring to early autumn provides the best combination of mild weather and open site access; spring and autumn are quieter than peak summer.
