Westerkerk is a Dutch Reformed church in central Amsterdam built in the early 17th century and notable for its tall tower, the Westertoren. The church’s tower is a prominent element of the canal belt skyline and includes a public viewpoint near its summit.

Interior spaces include a main nave and galleries typical of Protestant church architecture of the period; the building hosts worship services and occasional concerts. The church is historically linked to the artist Rembrandt, who was buried there in 1669.

The Westerkerk was constructed between c.1620 and c.1631 as part of Amsterdam’s expansion in the Golden Age and has remained a central parish church since that time.

The church sits on the western edge of the old city centre, close to the Jordaan neighbourhood and the Prinsengracht canal.

Take tram lines 13 or 17 to the Westermarkt stop and it’s a 1-3 minute walk; Amsterdam Centraal is about a 20-25 minute walk or a short tram ride away. The church is readily accessible on foot from the canal-ring area and has limited nearby parking.

• Aim for a weekday morning visit if you want quieter conditions to explore the church interior and to book a tower climb - the Westerkerk tower climb offers one of the best panoramic views of Amsterdam and can become busy later in the day.
• Check service times before you go, as parts of the church are closed during worship; timing your visit outside services gives access to the interior, the Rembrandt memorial plaque and the tower ticket desk.
