The Wazir Khan Mosque is a 17th-century mosque in Lahore’s Walled City, Pakistan, built during the reign of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan with construction dated to 1634-1635. It is renowned for its extensive tilework and painted decoration.

The complex features a large rectangular courtyard, an ornate prayer chamber, and four corner minarets, with detailed faience tilework (kashi-kari) and naqqashi frescoes across domes, iwans and facades. The mosque occupies a prominent location on the historic Shahi Guzargah and is closely associated with the surrounding urban fabric.

Commissioned by Hakeem Ilm-ud-din, known as Wazir Khan, the building served both as a congregational mosque and as an educational centre with an attached madrasa. Over time it became a focal point of Lahore’s religious and civic life and underwent conservation work in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

The mosque sits within Lahore’s ancient city core near the Delhi Gate and the Shahi Guzargah - the traditional royal route - and is accessible on foot from nearby Walled City landmarks and public transport.

• Restoration history: Conservation work was undertaken in the 2000s and 2010s to stabilise and restore tilework and surrounding streets as part of broader Walled City projects.
• Visiting: The best time to view the mosque’s interior frescoes and tilework is during daylight hours when natural light penetrates the prayer hall; modest dress and respectful behaviour are required.

What to See#

• Prayer hall and courtyard: The mosque courtyard and main prayer hall are arranged around a large rectangular courtyard; the prayer chamber contains the richly decorated mihrab and iwans facing Mecca.
• Minarets and tilework: Four minarets and an elaborately tiled exterior are key architectural features of the complex, with extensive kashi tilework and interior fresco decoration on domes and arches.
• Madrasa and Wazir Khan Chowk: The attached madrasa and small urban square known as Wazir Khan Chowk sit immediately outside the mosque and form part of the historic streetscape of Lahore’s Walled City.

Wazir Khan Mosque sits in Lahore’s Walled City near Delhi Gate and Lahore Fort. The easiest way is to take a taxi or rickshaw into the Walled City (the mosque is in the Shah Alam market area) - from Badshahi Mosque/Lahore Fort it’s a short walk (about 10-15 minutes) through the bazaars. Public transport options include local buses and metrobus/taxi connections to the Walled City; once inside the old city the mosque is best reached on foot.

• Visit early morning or late afternoon for softer light that shows off the mosque's tilework and interior frescoes while avoiding the largest midday crowds.
• Avoid Friday midday and major prayer times if you want to tour the courtyard and inner galleries-those periods are busiest with worshippers.
• Include the adjacent Shahi Hammam and the Walled City lanes in your visit; they sit within a few minutes' walk and are often overlooked by visitors who only see the mosque.
• Respect onsite rules: you will need to remove shoes and dress modestly; follow signage and staff directions about where photography is allowed to avoid causing offence or being stopped.
