Wat Saket
Religious Site Historic Bangkok temple atop a man-made golden hill
Perched on a man-made hill, Wat Saket’s gilded chedi rewards the climb with city views; pilgrims and tourists arrive for the temple complex, annual fair and quiet courtyards.
Wat Saket, commonly called the Golden Mount, is a historic Buddhist temple in Bangkok’s old city known for its gold-capped stupa atop an artificial hill. The temple complex is a well-known landmark that offers elevated views over the surrounding Rattanakosin area.
A stepped approach leads to the summit terrace and the gilded chedi, from which visitors can see the Chao Phraya River and much of Bangkok’s low-rise historic district. The temple compound also includes shrine halls, small exhibition areas, and spaces used for religious ceremonies, and it hosts a popular annual fair in the late autumn.
The site developed over centuries as a religious location and was significantly remodelled during the Rattanakosin period; the hill and chedi have served as a focal point for devotional activity and public gatherings. The complex contains layers of construction and restorations reflecting its long use.
Wat Saket sits in the Phra Nakhon (old city) area of Bangkok within walking distance of other major historic sites, making it accessible on foot or by local transport from the Grand Palace and surrounding neighbourhoods.
- Best time to visit: Climbing the stepped paths to the chedi provides panoramic 360-degree views over Bangkok's historic district; best times are early morning or late afternoon for cooler temperatures and light.
- Annual fair: An annual temple fair in late autumn attracts pilgrims and visitors, combining religious ceremonies with markets and processions.
What to See #
- Golden Mount (chedi): The gold-capped chedi crowns the man-made hill and is surrounded by a terrace that provides citywide views of Bangkok's old city and the Chao Phraya River.
- Temple compound: The temple grounds include various halls and shrines where visitors can observe votive offerings and small museum displays relating to the temple's history and religious function.
