Wat Phra That Lampang Luang Temple

Wat Phra That Lampang Luang is a historic Buddhist temple in Lampang province noted for its Lanna-period architecture and well-preserved teak structures. The site is recognized as an important example of northern Thai temple design and timber construction.

Visitors come to inspect the fortified temple precinct, the teak ordination hall with intricately carved woodwork and the prominent chedi claimed to house relics. The complex’s compact layout and traditional detailing make it a primary architectural attraction in the province.

The temple complex dates to the Lanna period and has been maintained as an active religious site across centuries, preserving much of its traditional form and decorative program. Its materials and construction illustrate regional woodworking and religious building practices from northern Thailand’s historical kingdoms.

Geographically the temple sits on a low hill overlooking the Wang River near the city of Lampang in northern Thailand, making it accessible by road from the town and surrounding districts.

• Visit early morning or late afternoon when the teak architecture of the ubosot and the decorated roofs catch warm, low light and temperatures are cooler than midday peak.
• Take time to view the wooden structures and carved doors around the main ordination hall-many visitors focus on the plaza and miss the detailed woodwork and older chapel interiors.

Generally considered the finest example of Lanna temple architecture in the country, this wat lies around 18 km south-west of Lampang. The central viharn, built in 1486, is believed to be one of the oldest wooden buildings in Thailand: open-sided, with a three-tiered roof supported by massive teak pillars. The whole complex is enclosed by a high brick wall, entered by a large staircase whose arch is topped by intricately carved lintels of intertwined dragon heads, said to date from the 15th century.

The wat houses two very important Buddha images: Phra Jao Lan Tang, cast in 1563 and enclosed in a golden mondop toward the rear of the viharn, and Phra Jao Tan Jai, which sits behind it. More recent 19th-century wall panels depict court life. Facing the viharn, to the right stands Ton Kaew, built in 1476, and to the left the Haw Phra Phuttabaht, dating from the 13th century; inside (no women allowed) an inverted image of the stupa is projected onto a sheet.

Behind the main viharn is a small museum of photographs and antique implements. The most important structure for Thai visitors is an easily missed viharn near the rear of the complex: here rests the companion image to the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok.
