Wat Pho
Temple Historic Bangkok temple housing reclining Buddha and massage school
Wat Pho houses the 46‑metre reclining Buddha and Bangkok’s traditional massage school; tourists visit for the statue, mural‑covered halls and proximity to the Grand Palace.
Wat Pho, formally Wat Phra Chetuphon, is a major Buddhist temple complex in the Phra Nakhon district of Bangkok, Thailand, known for its large Reclining Buddha statue and as a centre for traditional Thai massage.
The site’s best-known attraction is a 46-metre-long Reclining Buddha inside the main hall; the complex also contains extensive cloisters filled with many Buddha images and historic chedis. Wat Pho houses a longstanding traditional Thai massage school that continues to teach and offer treatments.
The temple has origins predating the current Bangkok capital and was substantially restored and expanded under early Chakri dynasty kings in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, consolidating its role as a major religious and educational centre.
Located immediately south of the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Wat Pho sits in Bangkok’s historic core and is within easy walking distance of other central heritage sites.
- Reclining Buddha dimensions: The Reclining Buddha statue measures about 46 metres in length and 15 metres in height and is covered in gold leaf with mother-of-pearl inlaid feet.
- Location and timing: The temple is adjacent to the Grand Palace complex and is commonly visited on the same itinerary as other historic central Bangkok sites; mornings are usually less crowded and cooler for exploring the grounds.

How to Get to Wat Pho #
Wat Pho is on Rattanakosin Island beside the Grand Palace complex in Bangkok. The easiest public route is the Chao Phraya River Express to Tha Tien pier (a 2-5 minute walk to Wat Pho) - many visitors reach the river by BTS Skytrain to Saphan Taksin then change to the boat. The MRT Blue Line Sanam Chai station is also within a roughly 8-10 minute walk of Wat Pho.
Tips for Visiting Wat Pho #
- Arrive at or just after opening to see the Reclining Buddha with far fewer tour groups and to take in the temple complex before the midday heat and crowds gather.
- Enter from Sanam Chai Road or the riverside approach and then follow the complex clockwise to catch quieter chapels and the massage school (Wat Pho houses a long-established traditional Thai massage school with treatments and demonstrations).
- Many visitors concentrate on the Reclining Buddha; don't miss the detailed murals and smaller chedis scattered around the compound-they're easiest to study in the quieter morning hours.
Best Time to Visit Wat Pho #
Visit Bangkok's temples in the cooler, drier months (roughly Nov-Feb) for more comfortable sightseeing and larger crowds; early mornings are best.
