Warraq Island is an inhabited island in the Nile River within the metropolitan area of Cairo, administratively part of Giza Governorate. It is a densely settled, mixed-use island with residential neighbourhoods, markets and pockets of small-scale agriculture.
The island’s built-up areas and riverside quays are the main features visitors will notice; commercial activity is largely local and oriented to Cairo’s urban population. Warraq has a long history of urban settlement within the Nile’s riverine landscape.
In the 2010s the island became prominent in public discussion because of government redevelopment proposals and local resistance to eviction and demolition, bringing attention to tenure and planning issues. The day-to-day character of the island remains that of an inner-city urban district with local services and markets.
Geographically Warraq sits in the Nile within Greater Cairo close to the Imbaba and Giza districts, approximately 8 kilometres north-west of central Cairo.
