Wards Island
Island Island in New York's East River with parkland
Island park in New York City’s East River, linked to Randall’s Island; visitors use sports fields, riverside trails and viewpoints of Manhattan and nearby bridges.
Wards Island is an island in the East River of New York City that forms part of the larger Randalls and Wards Islands complex. It is within New York City limits and is used for a mix of parkland, institutional and utility purposes.
Open green spaces and athletic fields occupy significant areas and are managed as public parkland in conjunction with neighboring Randall’s Island. The island is also notable for major municipal facilities, including a large wastewater treatment plant, which occupy much of its developed area.
The island’s use has long combined institutional, municipal and recreational functions; over time park development expanded to link Wards Island with Randall’s Island as a public recreation resource for the city. Infrastructure projects built bridges and service facilities that shaped the island’s modern layout.
Wards Island lies in the East River between Manhattan, the Bronx and Queens and is connected to surrounding boroughs by multiple bridges. It is immediately adjacent to, and functionally linked with, Randall’s Island to the north.
- Connections: connected to Randall's Island by pedestrian bridges and to the wider city via multiple vehicular and pedestrian links, making it part of an island park network in the East River.
- Land use: contains substantial municipal facilities alongside public parkland, so much of the island is used for utilities and services rather than typical urban neighborhoods.
What to See #
- Wards Island Wastewater Treatment Plant: a large municipal wastewater treatment complex operated by New York City, occupying a significant portion of the island's developed footprint.
- Randalls and Wards Islands parkland: parkland and athletic fields that are part of the combined Randalls and Wards Islands park system and open recreation areas for the city.
How to Get to Wards Island #
On foot/public transit: Wards Island is connected to Manhattan by the 103rd Street Footbridge (often called the Wards Island Bridge). Take the 6 train to 103rd Street (Lexington Avenue), then walk east along 103rd Street to the footbridge - the walk from the station to the bridge is about 10-15 minutes, and the bridge leads directly onto the island.
By car/taxi: vehicle access to Randall’s/Wards Islands is possible via the RFK/Triborough Bridge (service roads); from central Manhattan the drive is typically 10-20 minutes depending on traffic (roughly 4-6 miles). Many visitors use a taxi or walk from the 103rd Street area.
Tips for Visiting Wards Island #
- Use the 103rd Street footbridge (the Randalls/Wards Island pedestrian bridge) from Manhattan's East 103rd Street to reach Wards Island directly - it's the easiest and most scenic pedestrian access.
- Walk the shoreline paths and northern tip rather than passing straight through to Randall's Island; many visitors miss the quieter river‑edge viewpoints and small community gardens on Wards.
- Visit midweek or early in the day to avoid weekend sports and festival crowds that concentrate on Randall's Island's main facilities; this gives you the island's river views and quieter paths to yourself.
