Wallops Island

Wallops Island is a narrow barrier island on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, home to a long-standing U.S. rocket and flight operations site founded in the mid-20th century. It serves as a coastal launch and test complex rather than a residential community.

The site was established as a government rocket and flight-test facility in the 1940s and has operated as a center for sounding rockets, aircraft research and, more recently, commercial small-satellite launches. Over time it expanded to include a state-backed commercial spaceport that uses the island’s range capabilities.

The island sits off Virginia’s Eastern Shore in Accomack County, adjacent to the Atlantic coast and sheltered by tidal marshes and barrier beaches; it is accessed from the mainland via a short causeway and service roads.

• Island shoreline and wildlife areas: A band of coastal marshes and shoreline adjacent to the facility that provides habitat for shorebirds and acts as a buffer between the installations and open ocean.
