Wadi Al-Hitan (Whale Valley) is a palaeontological site in Egypt’s Fayoum Governorate noted for exceptionally well-preserved fossil whales and other Eocene marine life; it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2005.

The site contains numerous skeletons of early whales and related marine mammals, including large Basilosaurus specimens, preserved in situ across exposed rock beds. Many of the fossils show transitional adaptations from land to fully aquatic life, and are visible across scattered outcrops rather than concentrated in a single building or museum.

Fossils at the site date to the Eocene epoch, roughly 40 million years ago, and illustrate evolutionary stages of archaeocete whales. Scientific excavation and documentation have established the area as one of the key localities for understanding whale evolution.

Wadi Al-Hitan sits in the Western Desert within the Fayoum Depression, southwest of Cairo in Faiyum Governorate. The terrain is arid and flat to gently undulating; the main fossil exposures lie in dry wadi beds and require travel over unpaved desert tracks.

  • Getting there: Access into the valley is across desert tracks and often requires a 4x4 vehicle and a local guide to reach the main fossil beds safely.
  • Best time to visit: Best visiting months are the cooler, drier season from October to April when daytime temperatures are lower and desert conditions are easier for travel.

How to Get to Wadi Al-Hitan (Whale Valley) #

Wadi Al‑Hitan (Whale Valley) lies in Egypt’s Western Desert within Faiyum Governorate and is best reached by car or organized tour. From Cairo the site is a multi‑hour drive into the desert (commonly reported as roughly 2-3 hours depending on route and traffic); many visitors travel from the city of Faiyum or Cairo on guided 4x4 trips. Expect paved roads partway and unpaved desert tracks near the fossil site, and plan to use a high‑clearance vehicle or join a tour - public bus service does not serve the archaeological area directly.

Tips for Visiting Wadi Al-Hitan (Whale Valley) #

  • Plan for an early start from Fayoum or Cairo - the fossil fields are in remote desert that gets very hot by midday, so mornings are cooler and quieter.
  • Visit the Wadi Al‑Hitan visitor/museum center first to see the fossil exhibits and to arrange an authorized guide or 4x4 transfer; guides know the marked trails and local access rules for the protected fossils.
  • Stay on the signed trails and viewpoints and do not attempt to collect or remove specimens - the whale fossils are scientifically important and protected, and many sites are fragile.
  • Don't stop at the main display slabs only: ask your guide about the longer loops and lookout points that give broader desert context and often have fewer visitors for quieter, more panoramic views.
