Wadden Sea

The Wadden Sea is a broad intertidal zone along the southeastern North Sea coast, spanning parts of Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands, inscribed as a World Heritage site for its natural tidal ecosystems.

The Wadden Sea has long been shaped by tidal processes, sea-level changes and human coastal management; its ecological importance led to progressive conservation measures and cross-border cooperation to protect its functioning tidal systems.

The Wadden Sea stretches along the coasts of the southern North Sea from the Netherlands through northwestern Germany to southern Denmark, forming a continuous coastal tidal landscape.

• International significance: The Wadden Sea is a UNESCO World Heritage property spanning the coasts of the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark and is internationally important for migratory shorebirds and tidal ecosystem processes.
• Visitor safety: Low-tide excursions and guided mudflat walking are popular ways to experience the area, but such activities should follow local safety guidance because of tides and soft sediments.
