Mellum is a small uninhabited island in the German Wadden Sea off the coast of Lower Saxony. It is part of the intertidal island system and is managed as a nature reserve due to its ecological importance.

The island consists of tidal flats, salt marshes and dune areas that provide habitat for seabirds, waders and marine life and is important for bird migration and breeding. Public access is limited and regulated to protect wildlife.

Mellum formed through sedimentation processes in the Wadden Sea and is subject to tidal dynamics and shifting shorelines typical of the region’s barrier islands. Its conservation status reflects its ecological sensitivity.

It lies in the southern part of the Wadden Sea off Germany’s North Sea coast within Lower Saxony’s maritime area, reachable only by authorized boat trips.

• Explore only with an experienced guide; tidal channels are treacherous and the island hosts breeding colonies of seabirds that must not be disturbed.
