Vukovar water tower Tower

The Vukovar water tower is a reinforced-concrete municipal water tower in Vukovar, Croatia, widely recognised as a symbol of the 1991 siege and the town’s wartime suffering. The tower retains visible wartime damage and now functions as a memorial with public access.

Visitors can see the shell-pocked concrete and memorial displays and may use the tower’s upper platform for views over Vukovar and the Danube. The site is frequently visited for its historical symbolism and for guided exhibits explaining the siege.

Erected during the Yugoslav period as part of the town’s water infrastructure, the tower was heavily damaged during fighting in 1991 and left standing as a ruin. Stabilisation and conservation work were carried out in the decades after the war, and the structure has been adapted to house exhibits and a viewing area.

The tower stands within the town of Vukovar on the Danube’s eastern bank in Vukovar-Srijem County, easily reached from the town centre and regional roads.

If arriving by public transport, get off at Vukovar bus station or the local train station and walk into the town centre - the tower is a short walk (around 10-20 minutes) from the main bus/train stops.

• Visit in late afternoon when the low sun brings out the pock‑marks and shell damage on the tower's façade and tour‑bus crowds thin out, giving better photographic light.
