Vreta Abbey is a medieval monastic site in Östergötland County, Sweden, founded in the 12th century and counted among the country’s earliest monastic institutions. The surviving fabric and ruins make it an important site for the study of medieval ecclesiastical architecture in Sweden.
The site includes the remains of the monastic church and ancillary buildings, and it has historical connections with early Swedish nobility and royal patronage. During the Reformation in the 16th century monastic life was dissolved and the site underwent secular changes that affected its buildings and ownership.
Vreta Abbey is located at the village of Vreta Kloster between the cities of Linköping and Norrköping in Östergötland County.

How to Get to Vreta Abbey #
Vreta is about 15-25 minutes’ drive east of Linköping. Regional buses run from Linköping; driving is the simplest option. The area is signposted as Vreta Kloster.

- If visiting during summer, time the trip to coincide with the Vreta Medieval Days when the abbey hosts reenactments and concerts.
- Walk the short trail down to the Motala River - the abbey's setting beside water makes for very different photographs at dawn and dusk.
- Combine with a visit to Linköping (25 km away) for the diocesan museum and to trace the abbey's ecclesiastical history.
