The Voortrekker Monument is a large granite memorial in Pretoria, Gauteng, built to commemorate the Voortrekkers who left the Cape Colony during the 1830s and 1840s. The structure was designed by Gerard Moerdijk and completed in the mid-20th century.
The monument includes a substantial interior hall centred on a cenotaph, sculptural reliefs and historical displays that interpret the Great Trek era. Visitors also use the landscaped grounds and an amphitheatre for walks, commemorative events and exhibitions. The site is a prominent civic landmark on a hill above Pretoria.
Construction began in the late 1930s and the monument was inaugurated in 1949 after several years of building; it was conceived as a national memorial and museum to the Voortrekker movement. Its design incorporates symbolic alignments and reliefs that narrate episodes from the Voortrekker period.
Located on a hill to the south of central Pretoria, the monument overlooks the city and is accessible from major roads in the Gauteng province.
