Volcán de Agua is a conical stratovolcano in south-central Guatemala that forms a prominent skyline feature above the colonial city of Antigua Guatemala. Its steep slopes and high summit make it a dominant local landmark visible across the surrounding highlands.
The volcano’s name and local histories are linked to a catastrophic landslide and flood in the 16th century that affected early Spanish settlements in the valley below. Although prominently visible and historically important, it is not a frequently active volcano in the modern record.
The volcano rises from the volcanic highlands near Antigua and Guatemala City; Antigua sits at the volcano’s base and is the usual jumping-off point for visitors and hikers traveling toward the summit areas.
- Elevation: Elevation is approximately 3,760 metres, and the cone rises prominently above the town of Antigua, forming a dominant backdrop on clear days.
