Volcán Barú is an active stratovolcano in Chiriquí Province and is the highest mountain in Panama at 3,475 metres above sea level. It is a prominent landmark in western Panama and a focal point for trekking and nature tourism.

Hikers come for the summit views and for the chance, on very clear days, to see both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea from the peak. Routes vary from steep day hikes to multi-day trails that cross cloud forest and páramo habitats.

The volcano has had eruptions in the geological past and is monitored, but most modern visits are recreational ascents rather than scientific expeditions. A network of trails and local guiding services has developed around the mountain.

Volcán Barú sits near the towns of Boquete and Cerro Punta in the western highlands of Panama, within Chiriquí Province, and is accessible by road from regional centres.

  • Elevation and appeal: At 3,475 metres above sea level it is the highest peak in Panama and a popular objective for mountain trekkers seeking sunrise views.
  • Climbing conditions: Weather on the volcano is changeable and the ascent is strenuous; hikers commonly acclimatise in nearby towns such as Boquete and use guided services or mules for support.

How to Get to Volcán Barú #

Volcán Barú is reached by road from the Chiriquí highlands; most visitors base themselves in Boquete or the provincial capital David. From David drive northwest to Boquete (about 40-60 minutes), then continue on the paved mountain road toward the Volcán Barú trailheads - Boquete is the usual staging point and the last paved access by vehicle. Regular taxis, private transfers and organized trek transfers run from David and Boquete to the trailhead; the final approach to the main refuges/overnight huts is on foot and involves several hours of uphill hiking.

Tips for Visiting Volcán Barú #

  • Best time: aim to summit before dawn on a clear day - the pre-sunrise push gives the best chance to see both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts from the summit.
  • Which entrance/gateway: most hikers start from the Boquete side; plan your approach from Boquete and arrange an overnight stay or guided trek if you want a dawn summit.
  • What most people miss: clear-weather panoramas - when conditions cooperate the summit views are exceptional, so check forecasts and be prepared to delay for a clear day rather than settling for a cloudy ascent.
  • Avoiding crowds: go mid-week or book a guided overnight hike (many groups leave very late/early) to spread out on the trail and avoid popular weekend traffic.
