Volcán Atitlán is a stratovolcano that rises above Lake Atitlán in the Sololá Department of Guatemala, and is one of the three major volcanoes framing the lake. It is a high volcanic peak in the Guatemalan highlands and a prominent landscape landmark.
From viewpoints around the lake the volcano provides dramatic cone-shaped views and is often photographed with the water in the foreground. Hikers attempt routes to the summit and higher flanks for panoramic views across Lake Atitlán and neighboring peaks.
The volcano is part of the Central American volcanic arc and has produced eruptions in the historical record, so it is classified among Guatemala’s historically active volcanoes. Its slopes and the surrounding area have long been part of local highland life.
The cone rises directly above Lake Atitlán in the Guatemalan highlands, within Sololá Department on the lake’s shoreline. It forms a group with the nearby Tolimán and San Pedro volcanoes that together enclose the lake basin.

Volcán Atitlán is accessed from towns on the shores of Lake Atitlán. Panajachel is a common base; from there, boat crossings and local transport reach lakeside villages that serve as trailheads. Road access is possible but can be steep and rough.
