How to Get to Vlorë
Vlorë is reached mainly overland from Tirana International Nënë Tereza (TIA) by bus, shared minibus (furgon) or private transfer; there are no regular commercial flights into Vlorë itself. The city is well linked by intercity buses along the Albanian Riviera and is easiest to explore with a car or scooter for flexible beach-hopping.
Tirana International Nënë Tereza (TIA): The main international gateway for reaching Vlorë is Tirana International Nënë Tereza (TIA) near Rinas. From TIA you can take the Rinas Express / airport shuttle into central Tirana (about 20-30 minutes, ~300 ALL / €2-3), then catch an intercity bus or shared minibus (furgon) from Tirana Bus Station to Vlorë (see Bus details). Private transfers or taxis straight from the airport to Vlorë take roughly 2.5-3 hours by road and typically cost in the range of €70-€120 depending on operator and season.
Note - Vlorë Airport / local airfields: Vlorë does not currently have regular commercial airline service. There are small airfields and occasional private/charter flights, but for scheduled passenger arrivals you should plan to fly into Tirana and continue by bus, private transfer or rental car.
Train: There is no regular passenger rail service into Vlorë. Albania’s rail network is very limited and services that once ran to the south are not a practical option for reaching Vlorë; the nearest active rail hub for passenger services is Durrës (Durrës Railway Station), but onward travel to Vlorë will require bus or car.
Bus / Shared Minibus (Furgon): Intercity buses and shared minibuses run frequently between Tirana Bus Station (Stacioni i Autobusëve in Tirana) and Vlorë Bus Station (Stacioni i Autobusave Vlorë). Typical journey times are about 3-4 hours depending on route and traffic. Prices are generally in the range 600-1,000 ALL (~€5-9) for scheduled buses; shared minibuses (furgon) can be similar in price and slightly faster but leave only when full. Buses also connect Vlorë with Sarandë, Gjirokastër and other coastal towns (travel times and fares vary by route).
How to Get Around Vlorë
Getting around Vlorë is easiest with a car or scooter if you plan to visit multiple beaches and sights along the Riviera; roads are scenic but can be busy in summer. For budget travel, intercity buses and shared minibuses connect Vlorë to Tirana and other towns-within the city, walking and short taxi rides cover most needs.
- Car rental (€25-€50/day) - Renting a car is the most flexible way to explore Vlorë and the nearby Riviera (Himarë, Dhërmi, Llogara). Roads are generally good on the main SH8/SH4 routes but can be narrow and winding along the coast; allow extra time in summer. Fuel is moderately priced in Albania and parking in Vlorë's centre is usually available but can be scarce at peak season. A car lets you reach quieter beaches and the Karaburun-Sazan National Marine Park on your own schedule.
- Intercity bus & furgon (shared minibus) (600-1,000 ALL) - Regular coach buses and faster shared minibuses (furgon) connect Vlorë with Tirana, Sarandë, Durrës and other towns. Buses depart from the main Vlorë Bus Station; furgons leave from informal stops and depart when full. Buses are the cheapest option and reasonably comfortable, while furgons are quicker but can be cramped. During summer expect full vehicles and limited luggage space-buy tickets in advance where possible.
- Taxi (300-3,000 ALL) - Taxis are convenient for short trips within Vlorë or for point-to-point transfers (e.g., to nearby beaches). Meters are not always used-agree a price before you go for longer journeys, especially transfers to/from the airport or long-distance trips. For airport transfers or private day trips expect to pay considerably more than bus fares; ask local vendors or your accommodation to call a reputable driver.
- Scooter & bicycle rental (€10-€25/day) - Scooters and bicycles are popular for short hops along the seafront and to nearby beaches. Rentals are widely available in the summer; scooters give the best mix of speed and parking convenience but require confidence on local roads. Helmets may not always be provided-insist on one-and check the vehicle for damage before renting.
- Local buses (40-120 ALL) - Local municipal buses and minibuses cover routes inside Vlorë and nearby suburbs; they are cheap and useful for short trips but less frequent than in larger cities. Timetables can be irregular, so ask locally or check at the bus station. Local buses are a budget option but expect limited English-speaking staff and simple stops.
- Walking - Vlorë's compact old town and seafront promenade are best explored on foot-walking is pleasant, safe and often faster than short vehicle trips. Bring comfortable shoes for cobbled streets and be prepared for strong sun in summer.
