Vlašić (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Vlašić is a mountain massif in central Bosnia and Herzegovina known for alpine pastures, winter sports and traditional pastoral culture. It is a prominent local highland with established recreational use.

The area offers hiking and mountain walking in summer and a small-scale ski resort at Babanovac in winter with lifts and groomed slopes. The plateau is dotted with shepherds’ huts and pastures where local sheep farming and cheese production remain important activities. Viewpoints from the higher ridges give broad vistas over the surrounding valleys and central Bosnian landscape.

Vlašić has a long history as a pastoral region where transhumant sheep herding and dairy production developed over centuries. In the 20th century the mountain also became a local center for winter recreation and modest tourism.

The massif sits in central Bosnia, within the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, not far from Travnik and other central Bosnian towns, and forms part of the Dinaric mountain system.

• Babanovac ski area: Babanovac is the main ski and recreation area on Vlašić with ski lifts and slopes that operate in winter and basic visitor facilities year round.
• Pastures and cheese-making traditions: Extensive highland pastures and plateaus used for traditional sheep grazing and local cheese production are scattered across the massif and form a major cultural landscape feature.
