Visegrád Castle

Visegrád Castle is a medieval hilltop fortress and palace complex in Visegrád, Hungary, overlooking the Danube Bend. It is a notable regional tourist site for its historical ruins and river views.

The site includes the upper castle (citadel) on the hilltop with extensive ruins and a lower area containing the remains of a medieval royal palace and exhibition spaces. Walkways and vantage points provide clear views of the Danube as it turns at the Danube Bend.

The castle was developed in the medieval period and served as a royal residence and defensive stronghold during Hungary’s medieval kingdom. It suffered damage in later centuries, including during Ottoman-era conflicts, and has undergone archaeological work and partial restoration to present the palace and fortification remains to the public.

Perched on a hill above the town of Visegrád in Pest County, the castle is approximately 40 kilometres north of Budapest on the Danube’s right bank.
