Vilnius Historic Centre is the medieval and early modern core of Lithuania’s capital, noted for its dense mixture of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical architecture. The area contains the city’s principal historic streets, squares and many ecclesiastical buildings and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The cathedral and its square, the hilltop Gediminas Tower with panoramic views over the Old Town, narrow historic streets such as Pilies Street, and landmark churches like St. Anne’s Church. The compact nature of the centre makes it practical to visit multiple sites on foot in a single day.
The centre developed from medieval origins through the Grand Duchy and later periods, accumulating layers of architecture from the 13th century onwards and serving as Vilnius’s political, religious and commercial heart. Many buildings were altered or rebuilt across the 16th to 19th centuries, producing the varied streetscape seen today.
The Historic Centre occupies the central part of Vilnius on both banks of the Neris River and within walking distance of the modern city; most major monuments lie within the Old Town area around Cathedral Square and Town Hall Square.

How to Get to Vilnius Historic Centre #
The Vilnius Historic Centre is the city’s old town around Cathedral Square. It is within easy walking distance of Vilnius Railway and Bus Stations (roughly 15-25 minutes on foot from the main stations) or a short taxi/bus ride into the centre.

- The Vilnius Historic Centre is at its calmest early morning-use that time to wander away from Pilies Street into side streets such as Literatų Street and the small courtyard lanes, which many tourists miss.
- Plan a loop that includes Cathedral Square, the Palace of the Grand Dukes and Užupis; moving between these areas on foot reveals quieter churches, courtyards and viewpoints that don't appear on standard day‑trip routes.
- If you want panoramic photos, combine your walk with a climb up to Gediminas Hill (or the tower) around golden hour, when the old town's rooftops look best and the light is softer.
